Chapter Fourteen

After Martin and Cory finished their breakfast, they relented on feeding Benson and Bruce. With a piece of damper, they put the spaghetti and meatballs on two tin plates and took it over to them. This time, Martin stood guard with his assault rifle at the ready, while Cory delivered the food.

After the prisoners had eaten, their legs and hands were untied and they were brought out onto the duck. Then Martin escorted each in turn to the bush for relief while Cory watched the other. Afterwards, their legs and hands were re-tied and they were back on the floor of the run-about. Cory dowsed the fire with left over water and loose soil and joined Martin with their gear stowed in a cardboard carton. Now they were ready to move. Martin checked the fuel and saw there was more than enough to get them back to their own boat.

As he unhitched the ropes from the side of the amphibian, he yelled, “Cory, keep those bastards under close watch at all times. We’re moving off now, okay?” Then he started the engine and cruised down the creek towards the river, leaving behind the duck and the skins.

As Martin drove the boat, Cory, M16 in hand, took a seat near the pair with the warning, “No funny stuff or you’re dead!” Cory’s expression clearly showed he meant what he said. Martin, his rifle hanging over his shoulder, had the clear sliding door open but unless he looked through the door, he could not see the three from inside the cabin as the controls, except for the helm, were at the side, with a solid wall facing the stern. Benson and Bruce sat against the two small drums of fuel near the left corner of the back wall of the boat, in line with the helm with their legs bent and hands on their knees. They appeared desolate, untidy and wretched. Looking up at Cory, with a sneering expression Bruce lisped, “You’d be a mixed blood of some kind, wouldn’t you?”

Cory felt the racially loaded comment. He had no desire to enter into a banter with Bruce, who he regarded with disdain. He thought Bruce was a pathetic creature. At least Benson had shown some decent qualities – courage, leadership and loyalty to his convictions, even if they were so horribly wrong. But he was a mass murderer and would get his just deserts one way or another. Apart from a burning desire for revenge against Benson, Cory did not feel any antipathy generated by his personality. But he developed a pathological hatred of Bruce from the moment he laid eyes on him. Cory could not stand his thin and elongated face, his teasing manner of speaking and his sarcasm. Cory’s intense dislike of Bruce overcame his resolve for caution after the last incident. Bruce’s taunts got the better of him. He weighed up the risks and decided to put Bruce in his place without any further discussion. After all, he had the weapons and they had none.
